Using the Livella Silver Nursing Cups does not cause breast engorgement. The latter can have several causes, one being that the milk ducts are not properly emptied before new breast milk is produced. This can lead to a congestion in the milk ducts, which prevents the milk from flowing properly. The affected areas typically become hard and painful. If the silver nursing cups touch the affected area, wearing them often becomes uncomfortable, which is why the breast engorgement should be treated before continuing the use of the silver nursing cups. Question: What are the Livella silver nursing cups used for?
Answer:

The Livella silver nursing cups are intended for use between breastfeeding sessions. They cover the sore nipples and protect them from drying out and rubbing against clothing and shield them from external pressure. They further prevent the nipples from getting bent or twisted and from sticking to clothing. The mechanical barrier covers the sore area of the breast and thus enables the body’s own wound healing process.

Question: How should the Livella silver nursing cups be used?
Answer:

Clean your silver nursing cups before the first use by boiling them for 20 minutes. Caution: Burn hazard during boiling. Thereafter, we recommend cleaning them on a daily basis with warm water and a mild soap. After breastfeeding, you can place the silver nursing cups directly on your nipples. Adding a few drops of breast milk can support the healing process. Using other care products for sore nipples is neither needed nor recommended. You can wear the silver nursing cups comfortably under your nursing bra and Livella nursing pads. To prevent them from slipping, you can fix them in place using medical adhesive tape.

Question: How long should the Livella silver nursing cups be used?
Answer:

Wear the silver nursing cups before and after breastfeeding and only remove them during breastfeeding sessions. Once there are no more discomforts, you can discontinue their use. If you experience any discomforts again during breastfeeding, you can use the silver nursing cups again to protect your nipples.

Question: Can the silver nursing cups also be used before breastfeeding?
Answer:

The nipples often become very sensitive during pregnancy. The bra and clothing rub against the sensitive skin, causing an uncomfortable to painful sensation. Silver nursing cups can also be used during pregnancy to prevent the nipples from getting bent or twisted and from chafing against clothing.

Question: What to consider before using the silver nursing cups?
Answer:

For personal use only.

Please clean thoroughly before the first use.

Please do not wear them during breastfeeding sessions.

Keep out of reach of children. Choking hazard if swallowed.

Keep away from heat. The silver might pose a burn hazard when heated.

Do not freeze your silver nursing cups. Frostbite hazard when frozen.

The silver nursing cups are for external use only. Please do not insert into body orifices.

Livella silver nursing cups are nickel-free.

Do not use the product if you are allergic to silver.

If your skin becomes red or irritated, please remove the silver nursing cups.

Do not use the silver nursing cups on open wounds or on inflamed skin (e.g. caused by a fungal, viral or bacterial infection). If symptoms persist, consult a doctor before use.

Question: How to clean the Livella silver nursing cups?
Answer:

Tarnishing or „discolouration“ of the silver is a natural process (known as oxidation), which is caused through exposure to moisture, oxygen and light. However, tarnishing has no influence on the use of the silver nursing cups, but rather proves the high purity of the material.

In order to prevent discolouration, the silver nursing cups should be cleaned regularly (as well as after the final use) with a mixture of sodium bicarbonate, salt and water. To do so, line a bowl with aluminium foil and fill it with hot (but not boiling) water. Add 1 tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate and 1 tablespoon of salt before soaking the silver nursing cups in the mixture for 1–2 minutes. Important: Do not let them soak for longer than 2 minutes. Take the silver nursing cups out of the mixture, rinse them thoroughly with clear water, dry them and store them in their little pouch in a dark, dry place. Silver cleaning products or silver cleaning towels should not be used. These products may contain harmful substances.

Question: Can the silver nursing cups also be cleaned with wound disinfectant?
Answer:

Yes, the silver nursing cups can also be cleaned using a wound disinfectant. However, they should be rinsed thoroughly before being put back on the nipples to prevent disinfectant residue from sticking to the silver nursing cups which could be ingested by the baby during the next breastfeeding session.

Question: Are the Livella silver nursing cups safe to use?
Answer:

Our silver nursing cups have been tested for biocompatibility and toxicity by independent, accredited laboratories and comply with the ISO 10993 standards. Among other things, this involved testing whether silver ions are released from the material when it comes into contact with skin, sweat or breast milk. The laboratory tests have shown that no silver ions are released from the material during the use of the Livella Silver Nursing Cups. Their use is therefore safe for both mother and child.

Question: Why is it important that the silver nursing cups are 100% made of pure 999 silver and that they have no silver coating (trilaminate)?
Answer:

The purity of the silver guarantees the safety of the product due to the fact that the material does not contain any other metals which could be harmful to the skin.

In similar products with silver coating, the product core consists of other metals such as copper, which is then coated with a very thin layer of silver. To ensure that the silver layer sticks to the copper core, other metals such as lead and nickel are often added to the silver alloy.

Question: Are the Livella silver nursing cups really made of pure silver? Or is their core made of another metal (e.g. copper) which is only coated with silver?
Answer:

NO copper or any other metal than silver is used for the production of the Livella Silver Nursing Cups. Instead, our silver nursing cups are made of 99.9% solid 999 silver and thus have the highest possible purity grade. To achieve this, we have developed a special process that allows us to completely avoid the use of any other metals. Our certified silver is produced in Germany.

Question: Why do other manufacturers use silver trilaminate (silver coating) and what does this mean?
Answer:

When silver nursing cups are made of silver trilaminate, they have a core made of copper and are only coated with a thin layer of silver. Trilaminate is used as a less expensive substitute for pure silver to reduce manufacturing costs. The disadvantage of using silver trilaminate, however, is that the different metals it contains often lead to contact allergies.

Question: How to tell if the Livella silver nursing cups are really made of pure silver?
Answer:

The purity of the 999 silver we use for our Livella silver nursing cups has been tested and confirmed by the German TÜV Süd. In addition, we have the purity of every batch of silver checked by our laboratory before the material is used for production. The material is sourced from a German supplier. A copy of the test certificate issued by the TÜV Süd is included in the product photo section. It is a common misconception that "real" silver must bear a stamp with the purity grade of the material (e.g. 825, 925 or 999). However, silver stamps are not compulsory in Europe. Only a test certificate confirms the real purity of the material since stamps can be put on products without any external control.

Question: Why is there no silver stamp on the Livella silver nursing cups?
Answer:

It is a common misconception that "real" silver must bear a stamp with the purity grade of the material (e.g. 825, 925 or 999). However, silver stamps are not compulsory in Europe. Only a test certificate confirms the real purity of the material since stamps can be put on products without any external control. At Livella, we avoid putting a stamp on our silver nursing cups in order not to damage their surface. Only a smooth and dent-free surface can prevent unpleasant friction on already sensitive skin and stop clothing from getting caught on the silver nursing cups.

Question: What do the marks 800, 835, 925 or 999 mean on silver?
Answer:

The number indicates the purity / silver content of the material. 999 silver has the highest possible purity grade, as the material consists of 99.9% pure silver. The numbers 925, 835 and 800 designate silver of a lower purity. 835 silver, for instance, consists of only 83.5% silver. The remaining components (16.5%) are other metals such as copper, iron or zinc. For silver coating, a metal other than silver (usually copper) is coated with a thin layer of silver, which is why such materials have no purity grade.

Question: Where are the Livella silver nursing cups made?
Answer:

The Livella silver nursing cups are manufactured in our production facility in Germany. The production is carried out according to the highest quality standards. Every silver nursing cup is subjected to a strict quality control and only leaves the production if all requirements are met.

Question: Is it necessary to wash the nipples before and after wearing the Livella silver nursing cups?
Answer:

We generally recommend removing dried breast milk from the nipples before breastfeeding. However, there is no need to wash the nipples just because of the use of the silver nursing cups. Since the latter are made of pure silver that fulfills the highest quality standards, there is no risk of silver particles remaining on the nipples after use.

Question: Do the silver nursing cups also collect excess breast milk?
Answer:

The silver nursing cups are perfectly adapted to the size of the nipple, which guarantees a comfortable fit (diameter 4.5cm, height 1.1cm). However, they are not made for collecting excess breast milk. We therefore recommend the complementary use of our Livella Nursing Pads to absorb leaking breast milk.

Question: Is it possible to breastfeed with the Livella silver nursing cups or are they only designed to protect the nipples?
Answer:

The silver nursing cups protect the nipples and thereby support the natural wound healing process. They protect the nipples from drying out, rubbing against clothing and getting bent or twisted. However, as they do not have holes, they cannot be used during breastfeeding sessions.

Question: My silver nursing cups have discoloured/tarnished. Is that bad?
Answer:

As our silver nursing cups are made of pure 999 silver, which is a natural product, the material can tarnish and turn yellowish after a while. Tarnishing or ‘discolouration’ of the silver is a sign of the high purity of the material from which our silver nursing cups are made. It is a natural process (known as oxidation) which is caused through exposure to moisture, oxygen and light.

Question: Are the silver nursing cups visible under the bra?
Answer:

The silver nursing cups have an anatomical shape that is perfectly adapted to the shape of the breast. With a height of 1.1 cm and a weight of approx. 5 grams per cup, they are hardly noticeable or visible under the nursing bra.

Question: Are the silver nursing cups also suitable for flat nipples?
Answer:

The silver nursing cups can be used for flat and inverted nipples as well as for normal nipples of all sizes. In addition to the nipples, they also protect the areola from unpleasant friction or sticking to clothing.

Question: Can the silver nursing cups also help cure blisters on the nipples?
Answer:

In case of an existing fungal, viral or bacterial infection of the breast tissue, you should consult a doctor before starting to use silver nursing cups.

Question: Do the silver nursing cups have to cover the entire nipple/areola?
Answer:

The silver nursing cups should cover the sore and irritated areas around the nipples to protect them against any unpleasant external impact such as chafing or sticking to clothing.

Question: Are the silver nursing cups available in different sizes?
Answer:

The size of the silver nursing cups is generally suitable for nipples and areolas of any size. It is important that the nipples and other sore and sensitive areas are protected. The dimensions of our silver nursing cups (4.5 cm in diameter and 1.1 cm in height) are based on studies as well as the experience of previous users of the Livella silver nursing cups.

Question: Can the silver nursing cups be stored in the fridge?
Answer:

The silver nursing cups can also be put in the fridge between applications so that they have a pleasant cooling effect the next time they are placed on the nipples. However, you should not put them in the freezer; otherwise the direct contact of the cold material with the skin could result in frostbite.

Question: Is it recommended to add breast milk into the silver nursing cups if the nipples are sore?
Answer:

Silver nursing cups promote moist wound healing and prevent scabs. In the moist environment, new skin cells can spread more easily over damaged skin cells, which helps the skin heal faster. The silver nursing cups form a mechanical barrier and protect the sore area of the breast. As a result, there is always some breast milk present on the nipples, which promotes the body's natural wound healing. Since breast milk is believed to have healing properties, a few drops of breast milk can be added to the silver nursing cups.

Question: Does breast milk or moisture around the wound increase the risk of fungal infections, mastitis or bacteria?
Answer:

A fungal infection or mastitis is caused by bacteria in the baby's mouth and usually occurs when the mother’s immune system is already weakened. A fungal infection cannot be caused by the silver nursing cups. Appropriate treatment should be discussed with the doctor or midwife.

Question: Can the silver nursing cups cause breast engorgement by putting too much pressure on the nipple area?
Answer:

Using the Livella Silver Nursing Cups does not cause breast engorgement. The latter can have several causes, one being that the milk ducts are not properly emptied before new breast milk is produced. This can lead to a congestion in the milk ducts, which prevents the milk from flowing properly. The affected areas typically become hard and painful. If the silver nursing cups touch the affected area, wearing them often becomes uncomfortable, which is why the breast engorgement should be treated before continuing the use of the silver nursing cups. Other possible causes for breast engorgement are external factors, such as stress or wearing a bra that is too tight.

Question: Does wearing silver nursing cups change the shape of the nipples so that the baby can suck better?
Answer:

No, wearing the silver nursing cups does not change the shape of the nipples. Their sole purpose is to protect sore nipples from any sort of external impact before and after the breastfeeding sessions.

Question: Can the silver nursing cups be passed on to friends or relatives once they are not needed anymore?
Answer:

For hygienic reasons, we advise against passing used silver nursing cups on to friends or relatives—even if you don’t need them anymore.
